After the 1989 protests there were even fewer tourists in China in 1991 when we returned to Beijing and Chengde which had been the summer palace and recreation area for the Manchu emeprors of the Qing dynasty. It was cold in Beijing (all the rivers and lakes well frozen) but even colder in the North East where Chengde is located.
